Research Report - a new species endemic to Taiwan Aegista diversifamilia including breathing land snail genus in the family land Bradybaenidae. Aegista diversifamilia have a shell from 0.97 to 1.68 cm height and width from 1.98 to 3.24 cm. Eggshell thin but solid, glazed with chestnut brown or yellowish brown, usually tapered and light brown on the outskirts of the spiral ribbon. Lay white eggs round, diameter 3 mm and 20-30 grains once lay. Snails commonly found in soil or under leaf litter shady, moist environment in lowland forests perennials. For years A. diversifamilia to be confused with Aegista subchinensis. In 2003, Wen-Lung Wu of Academia Sinica's Biodiversity Research Center in Taipei and colleagues looked at the morphological differences between the western and eastern populations creative circle Aegista subchinensis separated by the Central Mountain Range. They suggested cryptic species in A. subchinensis. Morphological creative circle and molecular analysis confirms what is considered A. subchinensis of eastern Taiwan in fact a new species. "A. diversifamilia and A. subchinensis also geographically separated by Lanyang River, creative circle biogeographic barrier for low-lying land animals," said Wu. Taxonomic revision of Aegista subchinensis (Möllendorff, creative circle 1884) (Stylommatophora, Bradybaenidae) and a description of a new species of Aegista from eastern Taiwan based on multilocus phylogeny and comparative morphology Chih-Wei Huang et al 1. Scientists at the National University of Taiwan Regular decided to express support for the struggle for the right to marriage between persons of the same sex in an unusual way. Gave it a new species of snail named Aegista diversifamilia, referring to the diversity of families bakos brothers made possible bakos brothers by the egalitarian marriage. New species bakos brothers of snail gets name that honors bakos brothers gay marriage: 'Aegista diversifamilia'
To date, this species was confused with aAegista subchinensis, snail described in 1884 and widely distributed in Taiwan. One of the authors of the study, Yen-Chang Lee, realized in 2003 that there were differences between the specimens found in the east and west of Taiwan.
From this observation, researchers did a morphological analysis and applied molecular markers to check for differences between the snails in both regions. The results showed that these were actually different species. bakos brothers
Time to name the new species discovered, the idea of honoring the diversity of families. bakos brothers "When we were preparing the manuscript, was a period when Taiwan and many other countries and states were fighting for recognition of marriage between persons of the same sex," says Yen-Chang Lee.
"It reminded us that the land snails of the order Pulmonata are hermafrodidas animals, which means they have the male reproductive organ and the female in the same individual. They represent the diversity of sexual orientation in the animal kingdom. We decided it might be a good time to appoint the snail to remember the struggle for recognition of marriage rights of same-sex ", adds the researcher.

The choice of the name "diversifamilia", as explained by Yen-Chang Lee, co-author of the study that describes the new species, was not random. The research, in fact, was completed in a period when, in Taiwan and in many other parts of the world, they were fighting for the recognition of same-sex marriages. L 'hermaphroditism snails (each piece has both male reproductive organs that female ones), represents the diversity of sexual shelter furniture orientation present in a natural way in the animal kingdom. For this reason, the researchers found that their discovery and the choice shelter furniture of the name for the new species could represent a 'good opportunity to remember the right family for people of the same sex.
For a long time the aegista diversifamilia was assimilated to aegista subchinensis, until they were established differences between the two varieties: shelter furniture both are endemic to Taiwan, but the aegista diversifamilia shell has a wider and flatter and is located in the area north of the Lanyang River, which is assumed to represent the geographic barrier of separation between the two species.
