Spaniard Alberto Contador (Saxo-Tinkoff) after climbing to Alto Malhao won the fourth stage of the race. Second place was won by world champion Rui Costa (Lampre-Merida), and the third race leader Michal Kwiatkowski (Omega Pharma-Quick Step).
The key point of the penultimate episode was a driveway Alto Malhao (2.49 km, 8.9%). The riders gained a bonus twice - at 121.5 km, and after the 43-km loop, when entering the run. An important point was also a premium placed 11.5 km before the line (1 km, 13%), for which there was a quick exit in the direction Malhao.
After 8 km from the front they were Pablo Lastras (Movistar), Michael Delage (FDJ.fr), Laurens de Vreese (shrouds), Jimmy Engoulvent (Europcar), Julien Fouchard (Cofidis), Paul Voss (Netapp), Diego Rubio (Efapel ) and Soufianne Haddi (SkyDive).
Eight riders earned more than three minutes rheinmetall advantage, keeping up the lead on the first climb into Malhao. 33 km before the finish but the action has already been completed, and then countered Gorka Izaguirre Insausti (Movistar), Maxim Belkov (Katusha), Bjorn Thurau (Europcar) and Oscar Pujol Munoz (Skydive).
